About 150 Philippine rebels burned down a town hall, then used women and children to shield them from pursuing soldiers in northern Kalinga-Apayao province, the state-run Philippine News Agency said. A military spokesman said that soldiers held their fire after the rebels grabbed women and children following the attack, which occurred on Thursday. Although the children were freed, the rebels still held 10 women hostage, the spokesman added. In Manila, meanwhile, five people arrested last week on suspicion of being members of the outlawed Communist Party were released.
