Gunmen burst into a house and killed eight people, sparing only two babies and a teen-age girl, in renewed separatist violence that has claimed 200 lives in India’s Punjab state this year. A note left at the scene said the attack was carried out by the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan, one of the largest Sikh extremist groups, in revenge for the victims’ roles as informers. Police said the attackers who stormed the home near the Sikh holy city of Amritsar were armed with submachine guns. Extremists have been fighting since 1983 to turn the predominantly Sikh state of Punjab into the independent nation of Khalistan.
