Sales of foreign cars in Japan rose 42.9% in January to 5,957, the 49th successive monthly year-on-year rise, the Japan Automobile Importers Assn. has reported. December sales were 11,655, 50.8% up from 1986. U.S.-made cars, which accounted for 5.3% of the total, rose 70.6% to 319. They included 237 General Motors vehicles, 71 from Ford Motor and two from Chrysler.
