120 Arrested in Police Crackdown on Drunk Drivers

Police arrested 120 suspected drunk drivers during weekend sweeps using sobriety checkpoints, roaming patrol units and the Immediate Booking and Release System in Koreatown and Boyle Heights, officials said.

Sixty-five suspects were caught in Koreatown in an operation that ended early Sunday and 55 arrests of suspected drunk drivers were made Friday night in Boyle Heights, Sgt. Mike Pattee said.

Nineteen suspects were stopped at a checkpoint at Vermont Avenue north of 6th Street in the Koreatown area between 7:15 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday, Pattee said.

Capt. Ted Kozak, traffic division commander, said more than 30 alcohol-related traffic accidents and more than 85 drunk driving arrests have occurred within a one-mile radius of the Vermont Avenue checkpoint in the last six months.
