House Vote on Contra Aid

Share

The House correctly voted not to send aid to the Contras (Part I, Feb. 4). The question of humanitarian aid alone will be considered most likely before the month is out. Such aid should not be supplied to the Contras alone. It should be provided to all Nicaraguans who have borne the brunt of arms supplied by the United States to the Contras.

An aid package should be developed that would provide necessary food and clothing only. This aid would best be distributed by an independent agency such as the International Red Cross. This would give the best assurance that the aid money would, in fact, be used for humanitarian purposes. Further, it would provide some relief for those who have suffered as the result of our arms shipments to the Contras.
