Cetacean

Cetacean is not exactly a household word--though we’re working hard to help it become one. Needless to say, we were enormously pleased by the unexpected help given us in the Apt. 3-G comic strips of Jan. 3 and 4. It’s a word that causes puzzlement to many. We have been referred to, among other things, as the “American Citation Society,” the “American Crustacean Society,” the “American Flotation Society” and, my own personal favorite, the “American Sedation Society” (implying, we assume, that we are heavily into sleep down here).

The American Cetacean Society is the oldest of the whale protection organizations, having been founded in 1967. We are basically an educational organization, and one of our slogans has been “Even our name teaches you something about whales.” We’d like to thank Nick Dallis and Alex Kotzky, creators of Apt. 3-G, for helping to make our job easier.
