A court sentenced 13 Mafia gangsters to life imprisonment Monday, including a defendant who tried to kill two others during the trial, for involvement in a Milanese gang war that resulted in 44 deaths.

Eighty-six of the 109 defendants were jailed for crimes ranging from Mafia association to extortion, drugs trafficking and murder during a bloody 10-year war between rival gangs for control of Milan.

The war erupted in the courtroom last October when defendant Antonio Miano smuggled a gun into court and opened fire at two other defendants. Two policemen were wounded in the shooting but the intended victims were unscathed.

Miano, given 11 life terms, said later he wanted revenge for attempts by the men to kill members of his own clan.
