Filenet, a Costa Mesa technology company, said its 1987 earnings jumped fivefold to $6.86 million from $1.36 million a year earlier. Sales climbed 79% to $52.1 million, up from $29.1 million a year ago. Earnings for the fourth quarter were $2.8 million, nearly four times the $719,000 a year earlier. Sales rose 85% to $17.2 million. Ted Smith, president and chief executive, attributed the company’s improved financial performance to “increasing acceptance” of its products by the banking and insurance industries, federal agencies and international customers. Filenet, a manufacturer of document storage systems, said its earnings for the fourth quarter and year benefited from an extraordinary item of nearly $2.3 million as a result of lower income taxes.
