Washington Post Co. reported an 86.4% jump in earnings to $186.7 million in 1987, helped by a one-time after-tax gain of $23.5 million from the sale of its cellular telephone interests in the Washington, Baltimore and Detroit areas. The company said newspaper division operating income rose to $145.1 million for the year from $130.1 million as advertising volume rose 5.2%. Broadcast income was steady and Newsweek magazine operating income declined due to a soft overseas advertising climate and currency exchange rates.
