Ford Motor Co. began laying off 2,500 employees in Europe on Tuesday because of parts shortages from the strike by 32,500 auto workers in England, the scene of increasing labor unrest.

The Ford walkout was the largest labor dispute simmering in Britain, where 13,000 teachers staged a one-day work stoppage in London, ferry workers stayed on picket lines and 4,000 miners were idled by an overtime dispute.

About 180 workers who make transmission parts in South London joined the strike after working Monday.
