Hurricane-force winds swept across Britain and Ireland at more than 100 m.p.h., killing at least six people in a variety of accidents. Damage appeared heaviest in Ireland, where gales toppled trees and power lines, blocking roads and cutting electricity. Power outages left at least 12,000 homes without electricity in Ulster. In one of the most unusual incidents, a 40-foot hull section of a nuclear Trident submarine was swept off the deck of a transport and lost in heavy seas off the west coast of Scotland. Gusts of up to 50 m.p.h. were reported in London.
