Stouffer Hotel Co. will build an $87-million, 425-room luxury resort hotel and an 18-hole golf course in an unincorporated area near Jamul, the Solon, Ohio-based company said Wednesday.

The hotel is a joint development with Los Montanas Estates, a local investment group that includes San Diego attorney Peter Aylward. Los Montanas Estates’ four general partners include Aylward & Associates, Eisenberg & Associates, Sunbelt Resorts and LM Estates Inc.

The Stouffer Las Montanas Resort, which will cater to business groups and individuals, will be built on a 315-acre tract that is about 20 miles southeast of downtown San Diego. That tract is bisected by California 94. The golf course will be constructed on both sides of the highway but the hotel’s main entrance will be off Jamul Drive, according to a Stouffer spokesman.

Stouffer has received applicable San Diego County planning and construction approvals, including arrangements for water and sewerage hookups, according to the hotel company spokesman. Stouffer has arranged for construction financing and site preparation work is scheduled to begin in early 1989. The hotel will be completed by fall, 1990, the spokesman said.

Aylward’s group, which is composed of San Diegans, plans to eventually build a 170-home residential development on an adjacent tract. That residential development has received preliminary approval from the county, according to a spokeswoman for the partnership.

The hotel will have 31,000 square feet of meeting space, including two large ballrooms, 10 conference rooms and four executive board rooms. It will include 10 lighted tennis courts, a swimming pool, a health fitness facility, two restaurants and two lounge areas.

Stouffer’s complex near Jamul will be “the premier resort property” in San Diego, Stouffer President William N. Hulett said.

Stouffer, a unit of Swiss-owned Nestle Enterprises, owns or operates 31 resorts and hotels in the United States and the Caribbean. It will open a $90-million, 560-room resort in Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, in early 1989. Stouffer in 1986 opened an $83-million, 750-room hotel at Los Angeles International Airport.
