The World : Premier Resigns in Italy

Share

Prime Minister Giovanni Goria resigned as head of Italy’s 47th postwar government, a 6 1/2-month-old coalition battered by political infighting and a hostile Parliament. Goria, a Christian Democrat, submitted his resignation to President Francesco Cossiga, who asked him to stay on as caretaker prime minister until a new government can be formed. Goria, who at 44 was Italy’s youngest prime minister, has struggled since taking office Aug. 1. He was weakened by feuding between the coalition’s two dominant parties, the Christian Democrats and Socialists, and finally undone by a factional struggle within his own party.
