A land mine blasted a Sri Lankan police van, killing 12 people including nine policemen, a Sri Lankan military official said. Authorities blamed Tamil rebels for placing the remote-controlled mine 12 miles north of the eastern port city of Trincomalee. Tamil militants have been waging a guerrilla war for an independent homeland in the north and east of the island nation. Indian peacekeeping troops sent to Sri Lanka last summer under an Indian-Sri Lankan accord were reported organizing for a new assault on the guerrillas in the east.
