Toll Up to 51 as Another Palestinian Dies of Wounds; Nablus Curfew Lifted

Another Palestinian died Wednesday of wounds suffered Jan. 5, when he was shot in the neck during a confrontation with Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip refugee camp of Maghazi.

An army spokesman identified the dead man as Emad Hamlawi, 20, a resident of the camp. His death brings to at least 51 the total of Palestinian fatalities since the uprising began in the Israeli-occupied territories Dec. 9.

The military also lifted a 10-day curfew on Nablus, the largest city on the West Bank with about 125,000 people. However, riots erupted in the city’s casbah section Wednesday afternoon, and the army spokesman said that troops used live ammunition as well as tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the demonstrations. At least two people were shot in the legs, he said.

There were other violent confrontations on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and army officials said soldiers used live ammunition to drive off rock- and bottle-throwing demonstrators.

Still, Wednesday was one of the least troubled days of the last two months, and the army lifted curfews from several other cities.
