Pastora Vows Return to Nicaragua to Oppose Sandinistas in Elections
Eden Pastora, a one-time Nicaraguan guerrilla chief who as “Commander Zero” fought for and against the left-wing Sandinistas, says he will return to his homeland in August with thousands of compatriots to oppose the Sandinista government in proposed 1989 elections.
In an interview here Tuesday with reporters, Pastora said he will call on Nicaraguan refugees everywhere to join him in Costa Rica and march home.
“The exiles in Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela, Mexico, the United States and other countries, we should form a group of thousands and march along the highway to Nicaragua,” he said.
Pastora also said the armed fight by the U.S.-backed Contras was all but over. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected a new request from President Reagan for $36.25 million in aid for the Contras.
