A mudslide buried a hillside home and killed a Brazilian family of five in the resort city of Petropolis, 40 miles north of Rio de Janeiro. Torrential rain also hit low-lying slums north of Rio de Janeiro, where 7 million people live. Rivers overflowed, turning whole regions into lakes. Nine days of heavy rains and flooding have left 187 dea1679843694vaccinated people against feared outbreaks of typhoid, tetanus and hepatitis. Police patrolled vacated areas after reports of looting. “The situation is getting worse. We are in a war situation,” Petropolis Mayor Paulo Rattes said.
