Offended by Comments

In response to Jan Herman’s article (“Local Ballet Limps Along as Arts Center Looks to Big Names,” The Times, Jan. 24), I would like to say that I found the comments made by Jonette Rettig and James Jones offensive. I hadn’t realized that they have an exclusive on the performing arts. The art of dance should be enjoyed by all, no matter if you are a “weekend dancer” or have the aspirations of a professional career.

I am tired of the snob attitude that there is only room for the so-called “professionals,” and it seems as though, through Jones and Rettig’s comments, that they are both to determine this. Granted, the companies in our area are struggling both financially and professionally. However, I applaud their efforts and hope they will continue to grow.

If “the stuff you see around the area gives ballet a bad name,” then go somewhere else. And by the way, Ms. Rettig, I do know the difference between ballet and Bali Ha’i.
