Ford, already crippled by a strike that closed 22 plants in Britain for the last week, said it would cut 3,000 jobs at its main plant near London. Ford’s 32,500 manual workers have been on strike since Monday in a pay dispute linked to plans by Britain’s biggest car maker to revamp production to increase efficiency and competitiveness. Cuts at the Dagenham plant would be through negotiation with the unions and would involve no compulsory layoffs, a spokesman said. The Independent newspaper cited a confidential Ford document saying the company planned to cut jobs and more than double output per worker by 1992.
