Cancer Patients Often Suffer More From Society’s Reaction to Them Than They Do From Their Disease

Share

I am a cancer survivor. Not only is my cancer gone, but I am in better health than before I had cancer. I am constantly confronting the perception that cancer is invariably a fatal disease by prospective employers who are only mirroring the attitudes of our society.

This misinformation comes from so many sources: doctors who refuse to believe that the cancer they’ve treated is gone, “disease of the week” TV movies that glorify the dying cancer patient, insurance companies that arbitrarily limit health coverage. Let’s get the word out. Cancer patients can survive and be productive employees.
