College Roundup : UC Irvine Loses in Swimming

Jack Pentlarge won the 100-meter breaststroke (1 minute 9.91 seconds) and the 200-meter individual medley (1:59.56) to lead the UC Santa Barbara men’s swimming team to a 110-90 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over UC Irvine Saturday at Goleta.

Irvine was led by Matt Wright, who won the 50-meter freestyle (21.62) and 100-meter freestyle (46.92). Irvine’s Brian Judd won the 500-meter freestyle in 4:45.42.

The Santa Barbara women’s team, led by double winners Cindy Dougherty and Kim Bryson, defeated Irvine, 131-66.

Dougherty won the 200-meter individual medley (2:16.19) and the 100-meter freestyle (54.59). Bryson won the 100-meter backstroke (1:02.29) and the 200-meter freestyle (1:57.04).

Irvine did not win a swimming event but had two victories in the diving. Kirtsen Wolf won on the one-meter board and Trishna Coleman the three-meter board.

In PCAA men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, Nevada Las Vegas 1--Two freshmen, Mike Briggs (Corona del Mar High) and Carsten Hoffman (University), led Irvine to its opening PCAA victory. Briggs, playing at No. 3 singles, defeated Richman Mahlanga, 6-2, 6-3. Hoffman, playing at No. 5 singles, defeated Yuta Tsunoda, 6-1, 6-3. UCI, ranked No. 11 in the nation, is 2-1 and 1-0 in conference.

In the San Diego Intercollegiate Tournament:

Miles Walker of Chapman College defeated teammate Olivier Amerlinck, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1, to win the singles championship. Walker also won the title last year.

In the No. 1 doubles final, Amerlinck and Walker lost to twin brothers Steve and Stewart Jung of Nebraska, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

In women’s track:

Whittier 141, Chapman 100, Caltech 98, Masters 34, La Verne 0--Chapman’s Millie Lewis won the discus with a school-record throw of 125-8. The Panthers also had victories from Lewis in the shotput (34-9), Son’a Williams in the 1,500 meters (5:10.3), Diedre Lowe in the 400 (1:04.6) and Carla Figueroa in the 3,000 (10:45.4).
