Five hundred people burned copies of a government policy document in Hong Kong and chanted songs calling for immediate direct elections. The protest, called by 96 groups who want the people to directly select members of the Legislative Council now rather than in 1991, as planned by the government, ended with a petition being delivered to Gov. David Wilson. Reform groups claim the Hong Kong administration and Britain bowed to Chinese wishes last week when a policy document put off direct elections to the council until 1991. China regains control of the British colony in 1997.
