Joyner-Kersee Sets American Record
Jackie Joyner-Kersee set an American record in the women’s indoor 60-meter hurdles, and Gwen Torrence tied the American mark in the women’s indoor 60-meter dash Sunday in the Mobil One Invitational track and field meet.
Joyner-Kersee, who set an American indoor long jump record of 23 feet 1/2 inch Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Invitational, led from start to finish to win in 7.88 seconds.
Joyner-Kersee was running her first hurdles race of the indoor season. She shattered the old American record of 8.02, set in 1983 by Stephanie Hightower.
Torrence equaled the 60-meter dash record of 7.18 set in 1984 by Alice Brown. Torrence outleaned 1984 Olympic 100-meter champion Evelyn Ashford, who finished in 7.19.
