Abebe Mekonen of Ethiopia outran Tanzania’s Juma Ikangaa in the final kilometer at Tokyo to win 1988 International Marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes 33 seconds.
Ikangaa, winner of the race in 1984 and 1986, was second in 2:08:41. East German Joerg Peter was third at 2:08:47.
