WINTER OLYMPICS : Hockey Roundup : Soviets Rout Austria, 8-1; West Germany Defeats Norway, 7-3

Vladimir Krutov scored twice in the first nine minutes and the Soviet Union produced three goals in a 60-second span of the second period Monday night to rout Austria, 8-1, and remain unbeaten in the Olympic hockey tournament.

The Soviets will meet the United States Wednesday night. The second-round victory over Austria followed a 5-0 triumph over Norway Saturday. The Soviets are seeking their seventh gold medal in the last nine Winter Olympics.

Krutov scored the game’s first goal on a rebound at 4:34 only to have the Austrians tie it 84 seconds later on a breakaway by Silvester Szybisti--the first score the Soviets had surrendered in the Games.

Krutov put the Soviets in front for good at 9:01 in the first period. A deflected goal by Sergei Makarov increased the margin to 3-1. Five different Soviets scored in the period with Sergei Jashin, Valeri Kamenski and Alexandre Tchernykh all scoring between 6:08 and 7:08.

West Germany 7, Norway 3--Gerd Truntschka, playing in his third Winter Games, scored a pair of goals and added an assist, and Georg Holzmann added a goal and two assists to power sixth-seeded West Germany over 10th-seeded Norway.

West Germany, which upset Czechoslovakia Saturday, improved to 2-0, scoring three power-play goals and two short-handed goals. Norway fell to 0-2.
