Vietnam freed more than 500 former South Vietnamese officers and other personnel from re-education camps to celebrate the Vietnamese new year, Radio Vietnam said in a broadcast monitored in Bangkok, Thailand. It was the second time in less than a week that Vietnam announced the release of former officials of the U.S.-backed Saigon regime, which fell to Hanoi in 1975. On Saturday, Vietnam said it freed 161 such officials and plans to free a total of 1,014 by today. Camp prisoners never were formally charged or tried in a court of law.
