Fountains of pink and green sparks shot up from alleys, and bangs and crackles filled the air today as China welcomed the Year of the Dragon with the traditional fireworks greeting.

The Lunar New Year, renamed Spring Festival after the 1949 Communist takeover, is China’s most important holiday. Today’s brought more than usual fanfare because this is the Year of the Dragon, the most auspicious of the 12 animals in Chinese astrology. Vietnam ushered in the holiday with an official remembrance of its historic Tet offensive against U.S. and South Vietnamese forces 20 years ago.
