PIH Foundation Chairman

Joseph Tom, vice president of McMaster-Carr Supply Co. of Santa Fe Springs and a resident of Fullerton, has been elected chairman of the PIH Foundation in support of Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital of Whittier. He succeeds Robert Chapman of Whittier, a retired finance and accounting executive, who remains as a member of the board. First vice chairman of the foundation board is James M. Patronite, vice mayor of Pico Rivera and the first community representative from that city to serve on the foundation. Patronite is board chairman and chief executive officer of Azusa Engineering Inc. of Covina.

Newly inducted members of the 36-person PIH Foundation board are Virginia Boles, a retired dental hygienist of La Habra; Maggie O’Donnell, manager of community relations at Northrop Advance Systems Division and a resident of Pico Rivera; Charles R. Huxtable, a retired tool and die businessman from Whittier; and Patricia Scheifly, a fashion buyer and teacher also of Whittier.

Mosquito Board President

Alex H. Beanum, a former Cerritos councilman, has become the 37th president of the board of trustees of the Southeast Mosquito Abatement District. Beanum has been on the district board 10 years. Other elected board officers are William O. Nighswonger, a Montebello councilman, vice president; and James Dimas, a Commerce councilman, secretary. Nighswonger has served on the board since 1981 and Dimas since 1984. New board members are Wayne Rew of La Mirada and Odell Snavely of South Gate. The mosquito abatement district, with headquarters in South Gate, serves 30 cities covering about 700 square miles of Los Angeles County.

Toastmaster Club Installs

Toastmasters Club 587, called the Dynamic Forcemasters, has installed these officers for 1988: Hazel Fields, president; Bill Walner, educational vice president; Bernice McLain, administrative vice president; Jimee Hurst, secretary; Judy Hammond, treasurer; Gilbert Lee, sergeant-at-arms; and Tom Lopez, bulletin editor. Awards presented at the club’s last meeting were to Hammond for best speaker; Walner, best evaluator; and Fields, best table topics. The club meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Town Center Hall, Room 2, 11740 E. Telegraph Road, Santa Fe Springs.

Arthritis Agency Donors

Long Beach residents Norma and Art Borie were honored at the annual meeting of the Southern California chapter of the Arthritis Foundation for their donation of $300,000 to establish a fibrositis educational and research program. Norma Borie is a victim of fibrositis, also called fibromyalgia, a mysterious and painful disease of the ligaments, tendons and muscles. The educational and research program so far has lead to creation of fibrositis support groups in Redondo Beach and Glendale, and sponsorship of a scientific workshop on the disease March 18 to 20 at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs. Arthritis chapter chairman Gary A. Weiss presented an appreciation plaque to the couple.

Meals on Wheels Officers

The Whittier Meals on Wheels organization has installed these officers for the new year: Claudine Galezewski, president; Hazel Shesgreen, vice president; John Strayer, treasurer; Frances Nelson, recording secretary, and Berta Jantz, corresponding secretary. Those elected as new members of the Board of Trustees for two-year terms are Eva Campbell, Eunice Johnson and Ken Rogers. The nonprofit organization, which relies entirely on community donations, has been in operation since 1971 delivering two meals a day, five days a week, to more than 100 clients on nine routes.

Teacher in Leadership Role

Sandra Finstuen, supervising instructor at the Center for Learning Assistance at Long Beach City College, has been named to participate in a national leadership program. She will attend a one-week workshop in June in Amarillo, Tex., conducted by the National Institute for Leadership Development. She also will complete a self-chosen project on ways to organize the college’s several different tutoring programs when they are relocated into a new facility by fall, 1989, at the Pacific Coast Campus. Finstuen is a Long Beach native and has held her college post since 1978.

First Foster Parenting Class

Fifteen women have completed the inaugural class in foster parent training at Compton Community College. They are Betty Kessler, Mary Jakes, Zemery Jackson, Mary Hibbard, Evelyn Culpepper, Phyllis Johnson, Ruth Kelly, Janice Jacobs, Gladys Louisare, Loretta Anderson, Penny Rahmeyer, Dannie Wall, Theresa Shumpert, Eula Colbert and Dorothy Stoeckle. The new program began in October and covered techniques used to provide care for foster children. Instructors were Maxine Mobley, a Compton College faculty member, and Mary Lou Kessler of the El Camino College Child Development Institute.
