Maywood : Grant for Shopping Center

Share

The city has been awarded a $1-million federal grant to build a new shopping center--the second-largest commercial project in Maywood history--on the northwest corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Slauson Avenue.

In addition to the grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Maywood also will use $1.4 million in Community Development Block Grant funds and $500,000 in city redevelopment money to pay for the 60,000-square-foot complex, said Ron Lindsey, director of planning and development.

Lindsey said 17 businesses and 40 residences will have to be relocated to make way for the Slauson Square Shopping Center, but the new complex will bring more than 200 construction and retail jobs to the area. Slauson Square will be across the street from the city’s largest commercial project, the Maywood Towne Center.
