Local News in Brief : Food Sales Firm Sued

Share

The state sued a Temple City company Wednesday to stop allegedly deceptive and illegal door-to-door sales of freezers and large quantities of food.

Deputy Atty. Gen. Laura Kaplan said she would seek an injunction, restitution and civil penalties of at least $500,000 in Superior Court to stop the sales practices of Home Food Service of California. Most of the customers live in Fresno or Southern California and many are Latino, she said.

The suit accuses Home Food Service of inducing customers to sign contracts to buy freezers and large quantities of food costing thousands of dollars on the promise that the food would last a year and cost less than in supermarkets.

“The food which consumers purchase from Home Food Service does not last anywhere near one year and consumers do not save money by purchasing foodstuffs from Home Food Service,” the suit says.

Company officials were not immediately available to comment on the allegations.
