Aberuschka Wins Monrovia Handicap at Santa Anita
Aberuschka carried high weight of 121 pounds to victory in the $83,800 Monrovia Handicap at Santa Anita Wednesday.
With Gary Stevens aboard, the 6-year-old mare, favorite of the crowd of 17,615, paid $5.40, $4 and $2.80 after running the 6 1/2 furlongs on the grass in 1:14 3/5. She finished three lengths in front of Pen Bal Lady, who carried 118 including Jorge Velasquez.
Pen Bal Lady paid $11.80 and $7.40 after outracing Aromacor by three-quarters of a length. Aromacor, a 30-1 shot ridden by Aaron Gryder and carrying 114 pounds, returned $8.80.
An Irish-bred trained by Robert Frankel, Aberuschka last won a race while going a mile on the turf at Santa Anita.
