Eaton has agreed to pay $6 million to settle government claims against its New York-based AIL unit, stemming from a 2 1/2-year investigation into premature billing and improper charges. The unit was suspended from receiving new government contracts last fall. The company said the settlement clears the way for the suspension to be dropped, adding that said its agreement is not an admission of guilt but that “it is better to pay the $6 million than it is to accept the management distraction, . . . legal costs, publicity and uncertainty that would inevitably accompany a decision to fight this out in the courts.”
