Be-Bop ‘Cherokee’?

Share

In “Ray Pizzi Shows Pizazz at Residuals” (Feb. 17) jazz reviewer A. James Liska wrote that Ray Pizzi played “Ray Noble’s be-bop classic ‘Cherokee.’ ”

Be-bop?

Written in the mid 1930s by Noble for his own swing-sweet dance band? Then in ’39 recorded by Charlie Barnet’s band, becoming Barnet’s biggest hit and theme--be-bop?

Soon we’ll expect such gems from Liska’s College of Musical Knowledge as Basie’s heavy-metal “One O’Clock Jump” and Ellington’s fusion “Sophisticated Lady.”
