Focusing on Candidate Pat Robertson

I was prompted to write this letter in response to the editorial, along with other unfair media treatment of Robertson. The Republican candidate has been stereotyped and minimized to a “televangelist” when he is much more, namely a lawyer from Yale and the founder of the fifth largest cable network.

Robertson has been forced to respond to ignorant questions about his background, as reporters unsuccessfully attempt to bait him into saying something that would disqualify him. Despite efforts to tarnish his clean image, he still does well when the people hear his solutions to the issues of the day. Imagine how good he could do if his message were fully reported.

Some seem to fear Robertson’s Christian background. Be assured, however, that Robertson could not force his religion on the people any more than Jimmy Carter could force his peanuts on the people.

The Times editorial made this statement aimed at a Robertson administration. “The strength of the nation has been its ability to tolerate and incorporate different creeds, ideas, argument and dissent--not on the basis of whether that behavior was judged to be good or bad by the personal standards of a righteous few.”

I feel such a statement is more applicable to People for the American Way and the liberal members of the press who pass judgment on gentlemen such as Robertson in order to shape American opinion.
