Local News in Brief : Slow-Growth Bid Fails

An attempt by residents of northeast Pasadena to stop construction of the 184-unit Rose Townhomes project by putting a referendum on the city’s June 7 ballot has failed, City Clerk Pamela Swift announced.

Swift said 6,312 signatures, representing 10% of the city’s registered voters, were needed to bring the issue to an election. Petitioners submitted 7,157 signatures, but 767 of them were not from registered voters and 589 listed addresses outside the city, Swift said. An additional 175 signatures were disallowed for other reasons, leaving the referendum effort 686 signatures short.

The referendum was aimed at overturning a zone change that will allow construction of 20 houses and 164 duplexes on 16.4 acres north of Pasadena High School. Opponents contend that the number of housing units is too high for the property. Calmark Development Corp. bought the property from the Pasadena Unified School District for $9.3 million, contingent on city approval of the project.
