A Haitian opposition leader accused of attempting to provoke a revolution last August left the country after spending six months holed up in an embassy, said Haiti Radio Inter. Bernard Sansari, who was granted political asylum by the Argentine Embassy, boarded an afternoon Eastern Airlines flight bound for Miami, the independent radio station said. President Leslie F. Manigat, in an address on state television Friday night, promised safe conduct “for all of those in political asylum.” Sansari, who had led two unsuccessful invasions during the Duvalier family dictatorship, was accused by the military of distributing weapons last year in his hometown of Jeremie. He denied the charges.
