Bulgarian Breaks Weightlifting Record

SOFIA, Bulgaria —
Alexander Vurbanov of Bulgaria set a weightlifting world record in the middleweight class Saturday with a total lift of 382.5 kilograms (843 pounds).
He bettered the record of 377.5 kilograms (832 pounds) set by countryman Zdravko Stoichkov in 1986, the official Bulgarian news agency BTA said.
Vurbanov was competing in this year’s first official tournament counting for the World Cup.
There are 106 competitors from 17 countries taking part in the event at Plovdiv.
