San Diego Sports et Cetera : USIU Hands Top-Rated UCLA First Softball Loss, 1-0

UCLA shortstop Lisa Hankerd bobbled Amy Geldback’s ground ball, allowing Kelli Winkler to score from third in the 10th inning, as United States International University upset the top-ranked Bruins, 1-0, in the first game of a nonconference softball doubleheader Saturday at UCLA.

In the second game, UCLA beat the Gulls, 4-0. UCLA is 5-1, USIU 4-4.

Karen Winkler (3-1) went the distance in the first game for the win. UCLA’s Lisa Longaker (2-1) also went the distance, striking out 11, in a losing effort.

In the second game, UCLA’s Samantha Ford (3-0) pitched all seven innings for the victory.

Stacy Sasaki pitched an 11-hitter and Dani Goodlett knocked in three runs to give UC San Diego a 9-0 victory and doubleheader sweep of Loyola Marymount at UCSD. UCSD (4-2) won the first game, 12-2, as Dana Chaiken had two hits, and Sasaki drove in two runs.

Patty Hurtt (2-1) got the victory for UCSD in the opener.

MOTOCROSS Rick Johnson of El Cajon rode his Honda 250cc to victory in the 20-lap main event at the Coors Supercrown of Stadium Motocross in front of 38,893 fans at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Jeff Ward of Mission Viejo, on a Kawasaki, ran second, followed by El Cajon’s Ron Lechien, also on a Kawasaki.

BASEBALL Rick Nowak (3-0) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up two singles, but UC San Diego defeated Claremont-Mudd, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at UCSD.

UCSD (4-1) lost the second game, 11-8.

Nowak shut out visiting Claremont-Mudd (4-4) on just two hits in the opener. Dub Kruse put UCSD ahead for good with a two-run double in the second, and Jim Martinez added a two-run single in the third. Scott Stallings (1-1) took the loss.

In the second game, Gary Fessia hit a two-run home run in the first inning, but UCSD couldn’t hold the lead.

Karl Gneiting (3-0) pitched a complete game for Claremont-Mudd despite allowing 8 runs on 14 hits. Kyle Abbott (0-1) took the loss.

Harry Henderson was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs as San Diego State (6-4) defeated Cal State Northridge (3-8) in a nonconference game at Smith Field, 7-6.

Henderson, whose fielder’s choice to shortstop in the sixth drove in the winning run, now has three game-winning RBIs in SDSU’s six wins. John Marshall (2-0) earned the win and Dave Feeley took the loss.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Jane Gilpin scored 16 points and Candida Echeverria added 11 points and 8 rebounds to lead the University of San Diego to a 51-39 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over the University of San Francisco at the USD Sports Center.

USD (10-15, 6-5) limited USF to 25% shooting from the field (12 of 47) and moved into third place in the conference race. Melinda Harrison led USF (7-16, 4-7) with 17 points.

Pauline Jordan scored 18 points and Jeannine Jordan added 16 to lead Nevada Las Vegas to a 67-62 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over San Diego State in Las Vegas. Brooke Meadows led San Diego State (18-7, 10-5) with 17 points, and Chana Perry added 16. UNLV, which led 34-30 at halftime, is 18-5, 12-4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Dan’l Williams scored 31 points to lead Grand Canyon College, the NAIA’s 17th-ranked team, to a 106-96 victory over Christian Heritage College in Phoenix. Grand Canyon (28-6) led, 45-41, at halftime. Mark Kraatz scored 31 points and added 13 assists for Christian Heritage (14-12)

Zack Jones scored 32 points and Lorenzo Romar added 26 to lead Athletes in Action to a 107-93 nonconference victory over host Biola College. AIA finished its season 24-8. Biola, which led 48-46 at halftime, is 25-4.

HOCKEY David Nash scored two goals as U.S. International took a 5-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 nonconference victory over Air Force at the San Diego Ice Arena.

Gary Woolford, Dewey Wahlin, Ton Genz and Jim Hou scored one goal apiece for USIU (20-13), which earned its fifth straight victory. Air Force is 14-12.
