A federal appeals court in Washington rejected an attempt by America West Airlines Inc. to block the planned merger of USAir and Piedmont Aviation, saying the Phoenix-based airline had no legal standing in the case. In a brief opinion, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to grant America West’s petition to review the Transportation Department’s approval of the merger. America West contended that the merger will inhibit its ability to expand to eastern cities.
