The yearlong amnesty program offering U.S. residency to many illegal aliens probably will not be extended beyond its May 4 deadline, U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese said in San Diego. “It’s very doubtful there will be an extension, and that’s why we’re publicizing this program now,” Meese said. “We have 73 (more) days, and that’s plenty of time for anybody who is eligible to get their application in.” The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 allows aliens who have lived continuously in the United States since 1981 or before to apply for residency with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
