Doctor With AIDS Regains Full Duties

A doctor with AIDS who once was ordered to stay away from patients at Cook County Hospital was guaranteed full medical duties under an agreement approved Wednesday by a federal judge.

The consent decree signed by U.S. District Judge John A. Nordberg ensures that the neurologist will be able to examine patients, draw blood, perform spinal taps and handle other procedures included in his specialty.

The Cook County Board restored most of those duties last September after the doctor filed a lawsuit, but Nordberg had suggested the board could again reverse itself and asked for a formal agreement between the doctor and hospital. A year ago, the board, which governs the hospital, barred any contact between patients and the doctor.
