Thousands of people demonstrated today in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, while the Soviet army sent in troops and tanks to quell protests over a disputed area in neighboring Azerbaijan, witnesses said.

Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh virtually shut down the disputed area with a strike, travelers from the area said. Soldiers arrived in the morning and took up discreet positions in downtown Yerevan, particularly around key government buildings, Mofses Gorgiskyan, a resident, said in a telephone interview. They also deployed camouflaged trucks downtown and stationed tanks in outlying areas, he said.
