The influenza virus is active in at least 40 states and the District of Columbia in a late-starting flu season, with many elderly among the victims, the national Centers for Disease Control said. For the first time this winter, the CDC reported a surge in the number of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza in 122 of the nation’s major cities, reporting 864 deaths in the week that ended Feb. 20. Influenza outbreaks did not occur this year until late January, more than a month later than the start of the 1986-87 season.
