Hawthorne Will Vote on Zoning Change
An ordinance that would restrict development of about 35 Hawthorne properties to single-family homes will be before the City Council for a final vote on March 14.
The affected area--bounded by the San Diego Freeway, Felton Avenue, 120th Street and 116th Street--is currently zoned for apartments and condominiums.
The downzoning, given preliminary council approval last week, actually restores the area to its original single-family zoning. The zoning was changed to multifamily residential several years ago to create a buffer to protect nearby residences from freeway noise, according to city officials.
Subsequent construction of an earthen berm blocks freeway noise and makes the area suitable again for single-family homes, they said.
