The Air Force said it has launched an environmental impact study of bases that could be used as garrisons for rail-mounted MX missiles. In conducting the study, the service said it would review a number of deployment alternatives, including the fielding of 100 MX missiles on rail cars instead of just 50 missiles. Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci disclosed recently that the Administration would like to move the 50 MX missiles that Congress already has approved for silo basing to rail cars along with a new batch of 50 missiles.
