A broad-based coalition ranging from leftists to a Roman Catholic bishop launched a campaign against U.S. bases in the Philippines with demonstrations in Manila and other major cities. “Despite our differing political perspectives, we are one in our goal . . . to remove all foreign military bases, troops, facilities and nuclear weapons from our land,” said Maria Socorro Diokno, a spokeswoman for the group. Washington and Manila will soon begin a review of a lease agreement on Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base, which expires in 1991.
