The World : Cyprus Air Crash Kills 15
A Yugoslav Boeing 727 chartered by a Turkish airline slammed into a mountain peak in northern Cyprus during a landing approach, killing all 15 people aboard, officials said. There was no immediate explanation for the crash, but Turkish Cypriot officials said they believe the pilot may have misjudged the height of the mountain. The jetliner was attempting to land at Ercan airport when it hit the 900-foot peak near the ruins of medieval Buffavento castle, 12 miles east of the town of Kyrenia. Officials said the plane was carrying 13 crew members and two passengers. It was chartered from the Yugoslav JAT airline by the Turkish Talyia company to take 160 tourists visiting Turkey and northern Cyprus home to Finland today.
