President Andre Kolingba has commuted the death sentence imposed on ousted Emperor Jean-Bedel Bokassa to forced labor for life, Bangui radio reported today.

The 67-year-old, one-time army sergeant who proclaimed himself emperor was sentenced to death on June 12 for a series of gruesome crimes committed during his 13-year rule. Bokassa returned home unexpectedly in October, 1986, from exile in France to stand trial.
