Anti-government protesters exploded homemade bombs and set vehicles ablaze in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to protest Parliament elections due Thursday. Three people were reported killed. At least 10 people were injured, three critically, witnesses said. Hasina Wajed, leader of the opposition Awami League, and opposition leader Khaleda Zia addressed separate rallies at the city’s main square. The women have led a series of strikes and demonstrations since Nov. 10 to try to oust President Hussain Mohammed Ershad, the former army general who took power in a bloodless coup in 1982. They contend that fair elections cannot be held while Ershad remains in power.
