George Vassiliou was installed as president of Cyprus and immediately proposed a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Ozal “as soon as possible” in an attempt to resolve the division of the Mediterranean island. But Vassiliou, who was elected by Greek Cypriots a week ago, said any solution would have to provide for a pullout of Turkish troops from the northern part of Cyprus. Vassiliou called for the convening of an international conference within the framework of the United Nations to tackle the Cyprus problem.
